In this class, students will create a beautiful Baltimore Album quilt block featuring a peacock perched in a flowering tree, using the traditional technique of needle-turn appliqué. Baltimore Album quilts, popular in the mid-19th century, are known for their elaborate appliqué designs, often featuring flowers, birds, urns, and other meaningful motifs. Each block was carefully stitched and richly decorated, making these quilts both works of art and treasured personal keepsakes.
The peacock was a particularly meaningful Victorian symbol. With its magnificent tail and jewel-like coloring, it represented beauty, pride, dignity, and immortality. Its association with paradise and eternal life also gave it spiritual significance. During the Victorian era, the peacock became a fashionable decorative motif, appearing in textiles, furnishings, artwork, and gardens.
The peacock in the Met Presentation Quilt block is especially charming when viewed within its flowering tree. Together, the bird and tree suggest beauty, renewal, growth, and the celebration of life—themes that make this traditional design just as meaningful today as it was when these beautiful quilts were first created.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of needle-turn appliqué while exploring the history and symbolism behind this lovely Baltimore Album block. An optional sit & sew session is included in the class fee and will be held on November 22, 2026, from 2:00–5:00 PM EST, giving students an opportunity to ask questions. Supply List
