It is hard to believe another publishing year has come and gone. We publish six issues of our newsletter over a period of time starting each publishing year with our September/October issue. With the publication of our July/August 2008 newsletter we wrap up our 11th year of publishing the newsletter. This past year found our newsletter packed with insightful interviews, chapter news and news from our members as well as beautiful patterns to keep everyone in stitches, book reviews, fabric reviews and information about new sewing related products coming on the market. On the lighter side, TAS member Donna-Mae Baldwin’s column “Mystic Musings” captured the spirit of quilting in rhyme.
The September/October 2007 issue featured Australia’s own Lorraine Carthew who is known for her Mosaic appliqué. Lorraine lives in Brisbane Australia and you can learn more about her by visiting her website at http://www.lozquilts.com/index.html. Betty Augustine, administrator of Elly Sienkiewicz’s “Appliqué Academy”, http://www.ellysienkiewicz.com/, shared her “Tree of Life” block pattern along with hints on adding embroidery and other details to your work. Bunny Leighton designed a special pattern to celebrate 10 years of TAS and we were thrilled to present that pattern in this issue. You can see a photo of the pattern here http://www.theappliquesociety.org/shownshare/photos/10_year_finished_wal_100k.jpg and you can visit Bunny’s website to see more of her work or to order patterns http://www.bunnypublications.com/
We wrapped up our first ever appliqué mystery quilt project with the publication of the final pattern in our November/December issue. Phyllis D. Miller of Murray, Kentucky designed the patterns for “A Midsummer Dream” and they ran over several issues of the newsletter building the suspense to the end. You can see some of the finished pieces on our Show and Share page at http://www.theappliquesociety.org/shownshare/ShowNShare.htm
Elizabeth Scott is on the cover of this issue. We learned about Elisabeth’s method for adding lettering to a quilt with her project “Joy” from her book “The ABC’s of Words on Quilts”. TAS member La Veda Longfellow Myers offered our readers a lesson on drawing, inking and painting with are article titled “Zoe’s Painted Posies©” Photos from that article are on the Show and Share page, just follow the link above.
January/February 2008 TAS welcomed the new year with Pamela Humphries, a very talented quilter who’s quilt, “Feathered Beauties”, was only her second attempt at hand appliqué and hand quilting and it has already won several awards and is the subject of her new book “Award-Winning Appliqué Birds” available on-line http://www.americanquilter.com/books_supplies/item_detail.php?id=7494
Pam shared her pattern for the Western Tanager in the newsletter along with tips on how to use her “peel and stick templates”. TAS member Patty Goodsell shared her touching story on “The Miracle Bear” in our “Members Share Their Experiences” column. Kathy McNeil’s dolphin pattern “Sparkle and Friend” was the featured pattern in this issue along with insight from Kathy on the best way to create water and add stitching detail to the dolphin.
We were all ready for spring by the time our March/April issue was released. Who better to lift our spirits than Ricky Tims, http://www.thequiltshow.com Ricky was featured on the cover and it was fun getting to know this talented quilter and learn more about his Rhapsody quilts. Ricky also shared tips for successful blanket-stitched appliqué. With this issue we started a two part series of patterns called “Baby Baltimore” designed by Carol Mesimer. You can see this lovely quilt on our Show and Share page. Valerie Hearder was kind enough to visit with us and discuss her landscape quilts and her method to construct them. http://www.valeriehearder.com/
TAS member Anne Peck wrote of her experiences creating journal quilts in our “Members Share Their Experiences” column.
Celtic appliqué was the theme of our May/June issue. Our feature interview was with Scarlett Rose. Scarlett also wrote an instructional article titled “What is Celtic Appliqué”. Scarlett’s website can be found at http://www.scarlettrose.com/ Our own Ila McCallum, http://www.ilasquiltstudio.com/ donated her pattern “Celtic Tulips” which was featured along with Scarlett Rose’s “Basket and Flower” pattern and two patterns especially for those just wanting to learn the Celtic method of appliqué. Pat Cummings’ article “Celtic Knotwork Designs” offers a bit of history on Celtic Knotwork. A visit to Pat’s website http://www.quiltersmuse.com/ will yield a treasure trove of quilting and quilt history information.
It is the height of summer and our July/August 2008 newsletter takes us traveling the world with quilter extraordinaire, Suzanne Marshall http://www.suzannequilts.com/ Suzanne draws inspiration for her pieces from her travels and she always takes her hand appliqué and quilting with her. This issue Kathy Kansier’s column is devoted to her trip to Brazil. We have posted Kathy’s column to the website and you can read it here http://www.theappliquesociety.org/shownshare/pdfs/quilt-up-close-for-web.pdf You will need Acrobat Reader to view the file.
